Treatments

Modern, minimally invasive treatment options.

Most thoracic operations can now be performed through small incisions using robotic or keyhole techniques. Below is an overview of the treatments Mr Harrison offers.

Robotic Thoracic Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery using robotic technology for lung, mediastinal and thymic conditions.

Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery allows Mr Harrison to operate through small incisions between the ribs using highly manoeuvrable instruments and a magnified 3D view. It can be used for a range of procedures including lobectomy and segmentectomy for lung cancer, thymectomy, and removal of mediastinal tumours. For suitable operations, this allows surgery to be performed without the larger incision required for traditional open surgery.

VATS Keyhole Surgery

Minimally invasive keyhole surgery for conditions affecting the lungs, pleura and mediastinum.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) uses a small camera and specialist instruments passed through one, two or three small incisions between the ribs. It can be used for many thoracic operations and is particularly well suited to procedures for pneumothorax and pleural disease, as well as selected lung and mediastinal surgery.

Lung Resection

Surgery to remove part of the lung for lung cancer, lung nodules and other conditions.

A lung resection removes the affected part of the lung. Depending on your condition, this may involve removing a small wedge of lung (wedge resection), one or more anatomical segments (segmentectomy), or a complete lobe (lobectomy). The aim is to remove the abnormal area completely while preserving as much healthy lung as possible, and most operations can be performed using minimally invasive robotic or VATS (keyhole) techniques.

Bronchoscopy

Diagnostic and therapeutic inspection of the airways under sedation or general anaesthetic.

A camera passed through the airways to inspect, biopsy or treat lesions. Often combined with endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) to sample lymph nodes in the chest.

Chest Wall Surgery

Surgery for painful or unhealed ribs, chest wall problems and slipping rib syndrome.

Chest wall surgery can be used to stabilise ribs that have not healed properly, repair slipping ribs, or reconstruct the chest wall following injury or removal of a tumour. Modern titanium plates and minimally invasive techniques are used where possible to restore stability while preserving the natural movement and function of the chest.

Pleural Procedures

Drainage, pleural biopsy and pleurodesis for effusions, empyema and pneumothorax.

Combining diagnosis and treatment of pleural conditions in a single minimally invasive procedure, tailored to the underlying cause.
